Italie | Né(e) en : 1950Giorgio Laveri est un artiste italien pluridisciplinaire : peintre, sculpteur, céramiste, réalisateur et acteur. Né en 1950 à Savone, en Ligurie, il est installé depuis plus de 40 ans à Albisola, haut lieu de la céramique d’art depuis cinq siècles. « Quand j’étais petit, j’allais voir travailler l’argile dans les ateliers d’Albisola », confie-t-il.
Sa carrière débute pourtant loin des arts plastiques. Formé à la réalisation cinématographique, il devient acteur, puis assistant plateau et metteur en scène. Dans les années 1970, il peint une série de fresques murales sur la condition du peuple chilien après le coup d’État de 1973, exposées à Milan, Rome, Brescia et Vicence. En 1973, il fonde avec Nando Anerdi le groupe de théâtre « Rosacroce » et réalise son premier court métrage. Depuis 1974, il a écrit et réalisé 11 films et 19 pièces de théâtre, dont « Mariage Bet », primé au festival « Cinéma à domicile » de Rome.
C’est dans les années 1980 qu’il se tourne véritablement vers la céramique, initié notamment auprès de figures comme Lucio Fontana. Il travaille dans les manufactures historiques d’Albisola, dans la lignée d’artistes qui y ont créé, dès les années 1930, certaines des œuvres majeures de l’art contemporain céramique. Asger Jorn, Wifredo Lam, Lucio Fontana, entre autres. En 1985, il crée une ligne de céramiques sur le thème du cinéma, exposée par la BNP à Milan.
Refusant de choisir entre cinéma, théâtre, peinture et céramique, il cherche au contraire à « développer des corrélations » entre ces disciplines. En 1993, il rejoint le groupe français Art Mobil et cosigne, avec Patrick Moya, le Manifeste du Mouvement Artistique Méditerranée. En 1996, il fonde « Il Giardino del Mago » avec le service de santé mentale de Gênes, à l’origine de près de 200 événements mêlant cinéma, théâtre, performances et expositions.
Considéré comme une figure du mouvement néo-pop et l’un des céramistes les plus influents de sa génération, son travail a été montré dans le monde entier : du Château-Musée Renoir de Cagnes-sur-Mer au Palais de la Méditerranée de Nice, jusqu’à Monaco, Hong Kong et la Corée. En 2016, il reçoit le Premio alla Carriera de la Nobile Contrada del Nicchio et de l’Associazione Arte Vasai di Siena, en reconnaissance de l’ensemble de sa carrière.
Giorgio Laveri is an Italian multidisciplinary artist: painter, sculptor, ceramicist, filmmaker, and actor. Born in 1950 in Savona, Liguria, he has lived for over 40 years in Albisola, a town that has stood at the heart of ceramic art for five centuries. « As a boy, I used to go watch the potters at work in the Albisola workshops, » he recalls.
His career, though, began far from the visual arts. Trained in film direction, he worked first as an actor, then as an assistant director and stage director. In the 1970s, he painted a series of murals depicting the plight of the Chilean people after the 1973 coup, shown in Milan, Rome, Brescia, and Vicenza. In 1973, he co-founded the theater troupe « Rosacroce » with Nando Anerdi and shot his first short film. Since 1974, he has written and directed 11 films and 19 stage plays, including « Mariage Bet, » which won the critics’ prize at Rome’s « Cinema at Home » festival.
It was in the 1980s that he turned in earnest to ceramics, drawing guidance from figures such as Lucio Fontana. He worked in Albisola’s historic workshops, following in the footsteps of artists who, from the 1930s onward, had produced some of the defining works of contemporary ceramic art there. Asger Jorn, Wifredo Lam, and Lucio Fontana among them. In 1985, he created a ceramic collection built around the theme of cinema, exhibited by BNP in Milan.
Unwilling to choose between film, theater, painting, and ceramics, he has instead sought to « draw connections » between them. In 1993, he joined the French collective Art Mobil, and together with Patrick Moya, co-signed the Manifesto of the Mediterranean Artistic Movement. In 1996, he founded « Il Giardino del Mago » with Genoa’s mental health department, a project that went on to produce nearly 200 events spanning cinema, theater, performance, and exhibitions.
Regarded as a leading figure of the Neo-Pop movement and one of the most influential ceramicists of his generation, his work has been shown around the world — from the Renoir Museum in Cagnes-sur-Mer to the Palais de la Méditerranée in Nice, as well as in Monaco, Hong Kong, and Korea. In 2016, he received the Premio alla Carriera from the Nobile Contrada del Nicchio and the Associazione Arte Vasai di Siena, in recognition of his lifetime body of work.
